Opportunities for health choices can help people decide the right path for them. In Washington, the Board has authority to adopt rules for the Handling of Human Remains against certain vaccine-preventable diseases.
State representatives passed ESSB 5001, Concerning human remains during the 2019 legislative session. The new law legalizes two new methods for human disposition: alkaline hydrolysis and natural organic reduction. The new law takes effect May 1, 2020.
The Board is considering updating the rule, and has initiated rulemaking to bring the rule into alignment with the new law, and will consider:
- Final disposition of human remains through alkaline hydrolysis
- Final disposition of human remains through natural organic reduction
- Other updates to the rule as needed
The Board will review questions related to the new methods of disposition and consider possible revisions to protect public health and safety. The Board will coordinate and consult with state agencies and other interested parties during the rulemaking process.
