Revisions to State's Food Service Rules Adopted by the Board, Phase I Updates Now in Effect

The State Board of Health voted to adopt revisions to the state’s food service code at its October 13 public meeting. The three additional revisions to the proposed rule reflect recommendations by the state Department of Health that include food temperature, animals in restaurants, and food condition and retention. After discussion, members adopted the revisions and directed staff to file a CR-103 and establish an effective date for the updated rules.

The state’s Food Service rules establish standards and requirements to safeguard public health and ensure consumer food is safe, unadulterated, and honestly presented. The adopted amendments include revisions to reflect the 2017 Federal Food and Drug Administration’s Model Food Code and updates to address recently enacted legislation.

The Board worked closely with the state Department of Health on the proposed rule, with the Department collaborating with its Food Safety Advisory Council for more than two years to draft rule language and help process and consider feedback on the proposed rule.
